ONCE UPON A TIME...

the name that can be named is not the name

Originally from San Francisco and now based between Saint-Denis (France) and Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg), Frieda is a creator of hybrid performances. From an early age, Frieda was drawn to the air – and when not flying on a trapeze or entangled in a knot of aerial ropes, they are often found in the weaving of written stories.

Frieda began circus training at the age of seven at the San Francisco Circus Center, a school with the motto "Training is Bitter." After years of intensive (but not always bitter) practice, they crossed the Atlantic at 18 to deepen their circus skills and explore new cultural horizons in Europe.

Passionate about literature, Frieda combined poetic exploration with trapeze research, while training at the Espace Catastrophe (UP) in Belgium. In 2009, Frieda co-founded the contemporary circus company Kallisti and toured for three years with the trapeze duo Vol en Vers.

A desire to connect their ground work with their aerial research led Frieda to study physical theater at the renowned École Jacques Lecoq in Paris. They later trained in masked theater with Matteo Destro in Italy, and explored the Viewpoints technique with SITI Company / Anne Bogart in New York, as well as with Mary Overlie. This eclectic and varied journey, furthered by workshops and performances with director Firenza Guidi, has enriched Frieda's artistic approach.

Inspired by the collaborative ethic of SITI Company, Frieda co-founded the trans·disciplinary Collectif en Cours in 2016, bringing together a team of artists around a shared vision of physical and collective artistic research.

As an aerialist, Frieda's research integrates circus and theater, notably in their trapeze solo How to be Good, which explores gender and the desire to please. Frieda has also worked with French companies Louxor Spectacles, Dyslexcirque, Les Noctambules, and the Italian company ELAN Frantoio, directed by Firenza Guidi.

Frieda teaches the Viewpoints theater method and holds a State Diploma in Circus Arts Pedagogy (Diplôme d’État de Professeur de Cirque). They share their expertise by blending playfulness with artistry, teaching at circus schools around Paris and Luxembourg, and performing worldwide in events such as the International Social Circus Festival in Mardin, Turkey. In 2017, they directed a dinner cabaret with Circus Kathmandu in Nepal, fusing Nepali and Western elements and using the Viewpoints technique to create collaboratively with the performers.

Frieda studied circus dramaturgy at the National Center for Circus Arts (CNAC) in France, and regularly collaborates with Yaëlle Antoine / Cie d’Elles and Les Corps Caverneux. In 2021, Frieda and Yaëlle co-directed Naufratopia, the graduation performance of the Salto professional circus school.

As a director and dramaturge, Frieda created and co-wrote PARASITE, which premiered at the National Theatre of Luxembourg in 2022. They collaborated on Desire Lines with the collective Ampersand Variations (LU), a site-specific (in situ) project featuring audio walks, site-specific performances, and workshops for Esch2022 – European Capital of Culture.

Currently, Frieda is writing and directing insomnia: dreams for the end of the world, a transdisciplinary and site-specific diptych exploring trans·formation and the imagining of desirable futures. In parallel, they are developing Roots / Routes with Ampersand Variations. Created for LUGA – Luxembourg Urban Garden, this participatory and site-specific project weaves together story and movement to explore our connections to place. The premiere will take place on May 22, 2025.

Frieda is also continuing their training in new magic (magie nouvelle) at CNAC.
